Ensemble Modern

Ensemble Modern concluded its anniversary year in December 2020 with 40 new compositions. Since its founding in 1980, the formation has been one of the leading ensembles for new music. Based in Frankfurt am Main, the ensemble is known for its innovative approach and grassroots organizational structure.

Ensemble Modern regularly presents its programmatic range of music theater, dance and video projects, chamber music and orchestral concerts in tours and guest performances worldwide. In 2020, the ensemble made a name for itself primarily with professional streams of concerts, projects and symposia.

New CD releases have been appearing on the ensemble's own label, Ensemble Modern Medien, for 20 years; numerous collaborations and projects round down Ensemble Modern's multifaceted profile.

Ophelia's Culture PR contributes to a better national and international perception of Ensemble Modern with national and international PR and press work.

Ensemble Modern has longstanding collaborations with numerous contemporary composers. In addition to the central role of Frank Zappa, composers such as Peter Eötvös, Brian Ferneyhough or Heinz Holliger, but also musicians of the youngest generation such as Martón Illés, Unsuk Chin or Chikage Imai should be mentioned.

The origins of the approximately 20 soloists from Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Japan, the USA and Switzerland form the cultural background of Ensemble Modern. In its home city, the formation performs in its own subscription series at the Alte Oper Frankfurt.

In cooperation with the Frankfurt Opera, music theater productions and the workshop concert series "Happy New Ears" take place regularly.

For 2021, the world premiere of Heiner Goebbels' "A House of Call" and numerous livestreams in the series "On Air" are on the agenda, in addition to which there will be several (portrait) albums. Some of these projects are supported by Neustart Kultur and Bundeskulturstiftung, among others.
