The King's Singers

A cappella | Renaissance | Great Britain

The King's Singers are a legend in the world of a cappella singing. In 2023, the ensemble from Great Britain celebrates its 55th anniversary and presents itself highly fresh with the current members Patrick Dunachie and Edward Button (countertenor), Julian Gregory (tenor), Christopher Bruerton and Nick Ashby (baritone) as well as Jonathan Howard (bass). Three albums are on the release schedule for the year: "Tom + Will" together with the viol consort Fretwork was released on Signum on 13 January. It features Renaissance music by Thomas Weelkes and William Byrd. Warner Classics releases "Remember Me" with the King's Singers, star soprano Joyce di Donato and others, and with Disney songs from 100 years. The multifaceted circle will be completed in autumn, again on Signum, with "Wonderland" with works by György Ligeti.

Ophelia's Culture PR supports the King's Singers with classic press work for print, radio and TV. In doing so, they can draw on long-standing contacts to leading cultural media.

Exactly 400 years ago, in 1623, England of the Golden Renaissance lost two of its greatest composers, William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes. The familiar title "Tom + Will" reflects the popular position of the two in their time. However, the coincidence in the dates of their deaths should not obscure the fact that these are two very different musical personalities who, moreover, belonged to different generations. The compilation of works is complemented by two contemporary compositions by Sir James MacMillan and Roderick Williams, who have fitted them perfectly into the programme.

The King's Singers need no explanation, nor does the viol consort Fretwork; both are ensembles of superlatives and represent the British musical tradition par excellence. Their art is deeply rooted in the rich musical culture of Great Britain, and on this foundation they develop the highest skills in a modern appearance. The BBC sums it up:

"The King's Singers are just wonderful ... when you put them together with an ensemble like Fretwork, it's a wonderful combination because they are so skilled ... it's so fluid, it's beautiful."
