Köthener Bachfesttage

Festival | Baroque | Concert design

The Köthen Bach Festival, which will take place in 2022 from 28 August to 4 September, is one of the three most important Bach festivals in Germany. From humble beginnings in 1967, a festival has developed to which Bach lovers from all over the world make a pilgrimage to Köthen every two years. The Köthener Bach Festival traces the image of the young composer Johann Sebastian Bach, who spent extremely productive years in Köthen. In 2016, the festival was designed for the first time by the Berlin concert designer Folkert Uhde. In the same year, the BachCollektiv was founded, which develops musical programmes in and for Köthen under the artistic direction of violinist Midori Seiler. For the festival, artistic director Uhde established his own unusual concert formats that take place throughout the city.

Ophelia's Culture PR contributes to a better national and international perception of the Köthen Bach Festival Days with regional and national press work. Classic press work and the organisation of press trips are designed to make the Köthener Bachfesttage and its amazing programme diversity widely visible.

With an extensive programme and a great love of experimentation, the Köthener Bachfesttage moves along the borderline between an awareness of tradition and a curious look at contemporary forms of presentation for music lovers from classical to electronic. By now almost traditional, there are exclusive projects developed especially for and in Köthen. Important venues for the Köthen Bach Festival Days are the Köthen Renaissance Palace and the St. Agnus Church.

As "Orchestra in Residence", the BachCollektiv is modelled on the Köthen court orchestra of Bach's time. The artists who regularly perform in Köthen include early music specialists such as Christine Schornsheim, Valer Sabadus, Hille Perl and many others. Long-time partners of the Köthen Bach Festival are mdr and Deutschlandfunk.

In 2021, the 12th Bach Competition for Young Pianists took place in Köthen from 27 to 31 October. The next Köthener Bach Festival is planned for 28 August to 4 September 2022.
