Göttingen International Handel Festival

Festival | Baroque | Opera

As the oldest festival for baroque music, the Göttingen International Handel Festival laid the foundation for the Handel Renaissance in the 20th century. For more than a hundred years, fans of baroque music and especially that of George Frideric Handel have been making pilgrimages to the university city from all over the world in early summer. Many of his most famous operas have had their modern world premiere in Göttingen. Until 2021, the artistic director is the British conductor Laurence Cummings, one of the most interesting and versatile protagonists of historical performance practice. After "Rodelinda" in 1920, all 42 operas and numerous oratorios by the baroque master and many works by his contemporaries have been performed in Göttingen to date.

Ophelia's Culture PR has been providing the festival with German-language press works since 2008. The focus is on press trips to the festival and the organization of interviews to support the international reputation of the tradition-rich festival.

In addition to the Festival opera and oratorios, the focus is traditionally on projects for children, young people and adults, such as the "göttingen händel competition" for young musicians, sponsored by the Göttingen Handel Society. In this way, the Festival brings together cultural workers and music enthusiasts from all over the world in Göttingen and promotes a lively engagement with Handel and Baroque music.

After an online festival in May - when the festival usually takes place - the actual festival, which makes up for the centenary, will be celebrated from September 9 to 19, 2021.
