Few musicians have had such a strong influence on Basel's musical life as Paul Sacher (1906-1999). As a conductor, commissioner of new compositions and as a patron and member of numerous committees and institutions, he devoted himself to the contemporary music of his century in many ways. In 1973, he founded the Paul Sacher Foundation and later established it as a research institution of international standing with the estate of Igor Stravinsky and collections by Anton Webern and Bruno Maderna. In the spirit of the Basel conductor, who died in 1999, the BCC aims to bring the most exciting composers of the 21st century to Basel.

In a selection process, ten to twelve new compositions that have not yet been performed (not even in excerpts) and have not yet been honoured with a prize will be nominated to be performed in a public competition by the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Sinfonietta. The three best compositions will be honoured and receive prize money totalling CHF 100,000.
