Bachakademie Stuttgart

Bach | Stuttgart | Baroque

Johann Sebastian Bach's life path never led to Stuttgart. And yet the city in the German southwest has been one of the world's most important centres of Bach cultivation for more than forty years. The Foundation International Bach Academy Stuttgart, founded in 1981, keeps the musical heritage of J.S. Bach, his contemporaries, predecessors and successors alive through events and outreach, education and research. Diverse concert formats, innovative music education and the digital offering of podcasts and concert streams make the International Bach Academy an important cultural and social player in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg and the world.

Since 2013, the institution has been under the direction of conductor Hans-Christoph Rademann, who in 2016 brought together the former ensembles Gächinger Kantorei (choir) and Bach-Collegium Stuttgart (orchestra) to form an ensemble of reformed choir and newly founded baroque orchestra under the name Gaechinger Cantorey. The aim of this finely tuned original sound ensemble is the international dissemination of a historically informed "Stuttgart Bach style".

With "VISION.BACH - Understanding Life with Bach", the International Bach Academy Stuttgart has now embarked on a large-scale cantata project. From 14 May 2023 to 31 May 2024, the Gaechinger Cantorey, conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann, will perform Johann Sebastian Bach's first Leipzig cantata year in its entirety, in the original order and exactly 300 years after it was written. In 23 concerts, the sixty cantatas will be heard in churches and concert halls in the Stuttgart region as well as at prominent festivals.
