The "Forest Opera" in Sopot can look back on an eventful history: founded in 1909, it became known as the "Bayreuth of the North" under the Nazis. In 2009, at the concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the "Forest Opera", Wagner and the opera returned to the stage. With a concert performance of the "Ring", the well-known opera singer Tomasz Konieczny, founder of the Baltic Opera Festival, gave the history of this place a new direction.

In 2024, Tomasz Konieczny will once again be the artistic director of the Baltic Opera Festival in Gdansk and Sopot. This year, to mark the 100th anniversary of the composer's death, the programme includes a new production of Giacomo Puccini's "Turandot" and Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman". The Baltic Opera in Gdansk will also be presenting a new production of Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel". The festival's resident orchestra is the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra. The orchestra, founded on the initiative of Keri-Lynn Wilson, will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and the solo parts will be sung by BOF soloists in Ukrainian.
