The events will be held in the Meistersaal at Potsdamer Platz and the temporary bauhaus-archiv at Knesebeckstraße 1 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Visitors can look forward to three days of concerts, talks, tours and a workshop concert, highlighting how music influenced the atmosphere of the Bauhaus and became a normal part of everyday life among Bauhaus students and staff. Under the artistic direction of the musicologist Kai Hinrich Müller and the musicians Michal Friedländer and Karl-Heinz Steffens, the programme presents works which are inherently tied to the Bauhaus.
Ticket sales begin on 1 August
Tickets to the individual concerts are available now on the website of the Bauhaus-Archiv. Participation in the workshop concert, talks and tours is free of charge, but pre-registration to attend the events is required.
Complete programme
In 1923, the State Bauhaus in Weimar opened its doors to the public for the first time with a major exhibition – and music played a predominant role. The composers Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith and Ferrucio Busoni were all guests in Weimar and presented their works during the five-day Bauhaus Week which kicked off the exhibition. In commemoration of its 100th anniversary, the bauhaus music weekend showcases the musical works presented in 1923. The programme begins on Friday, 22 September, with a workshop concert at the temporary bauhaus-archiv. The alumni of the Berlin-based Barenboim-Said Akademie will present Arnold Schönberg’s epochal melodrama Pierrot lunaire in cooperation with renowned musicians working with Karl-Heinz Steffens and Michal Friedländer. After the opening event, the programme continues on Saturday, the 23rd, and Sunday, the 24th of September at the Berlin Meistersaal with a broad spectrum of musical performances by international artists. These include the German-language version of Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale featuring Itay Tiran (speaker). Talks about the Bauhaus and music will contextualise the performances and round off the programme.
The Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung and PD Dr Kai Hinrich Müller have been studying the musical life at the historic Bauhaus sites in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin since 2021. During this year’s bauhaus music weekend, the interdisciplinary team will present its initial findings from its extensive research project and offer insights into the largely unknown connection between music and the famous school of art and design. The bauhaus music weekend 2023 is made possible with special funding provided by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion. It marks the start of a three-year event series on the topic of the Bauhaus and music.
