Record-high number of applicants for The Queen Sonja International Music Competition
A sparkling bouquet of 304 singers from 49 nations have applied to take part in this year's Competition in Oslo, 13 – 23 August. The Scandinavian screening jury will evaluate all applications during April. In early May, QSIMC will invite around 40 singers to take part in the Competition in August. The collaborating opera academies of QSIMC have nominated 12 singers, who will be admitted directly to the preliminary rounds in Oslo: Bayerische Staatsoper Young Artist Program, Munich; Bolshoi Theatre of Russia Young Artist Program, Moscow; Internationales Opernstudio, Opernhaus Zurich; Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, Royal Opera House, London; Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Metropolitan Opera, New York; Teatro alla Scala Academy Young Artist Program, Teatro alla Scala, Milan; and The International Opera Studio, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin. The Competition is experiencing considerable international attention, which is reflected in the large amount of applications and the many nations represented amongst our applicants.

Also, the competent and prestigious jury for the 2019 competition is complete. The seven distinguished members are: Birgitta Svendén, CEO and Artistic Director at The Royal Opera in Stockholm is again the chairwoman of the jury. The other jury members are Stefan Herheim, a renowned Norwegian opera director, the South-Korean soprano Sumi Jo, the Director of Artistic Production at Opéra national de Lyon, France, and appointed Casting Director at the Vienna State Opera from 2020, Robert Körner, the Russian baritone Sergei Leiferkus, Annilese Miskimmon, Director of Opera at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet in Oslo and Diane Zola, Assistant General Manager at the Metropolitan Opera. The Queen Sonja International Music Competition is one of the world’s leading voice competitions. It takes place every second year in Oslo and is open for singers from all over the world. The main goal of the competition is to assist the career development of talented young singers. It also acts as a bridge builder between the Norwegian and international music scenes. Singers of all nationalities may apply to take part of the competition. Upper age limit is 32 years. Several participants for each competition are also nominated by the competition’s collaborating opera academies. Through several rounds, a jury consisting of internationally renowned opera directors, singers and casting associates from some of the world's top opera houses judge the participants' efforts. Each competition culminates in a grand final concert and prize-giving ceremony with H.M. Queen Sonja. The competition’s institutional partners include the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Court.
