As one of the three royal opera houses in Belgium, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège is one of the country’s most important cultural institutions. Founded in 1820 by the local citizens, it has a longer tradition than the Belgian monarchy itself. Today, it is a modern opera house with regular online broadcasts, including those on Culturebox and medici.tv, which are received worldwide. The current general director is Stefano Pace, and since 2022, the chief conductor has been Giampaolo Bisanti.
In the 2024/25 season, Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde returns to the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège for the first time since 1926. An exciting world premiere of Benoît Mernier’s one-act opera Bartleby, based on Herman Melville’s novella, is set for May 2026. In the 2025/26 season, works by Gounod, Mozart, Donizetti, and Verdi will be performed alongside Johann Strauss II, Tchaikovsky, Nino Rota, and Poulenc.
Ophelias Culture PR has been supporting the Opéra Liège with regional press work in the German-speaking countries for many years. Traditional press work and the organization of press trips help raise awareness of the opera house in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
