On January 30, 2024, the Spanish government officially recognized Zarzuela as a “representative expression of intangible cultural heritage” – with the goal of securing its inclusion in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Acclaimed international director Christof Loy has taken up this initiative by founding LOS PALADINES, a company dedicated entirely to the promotion of this rich and often underestimated art form. Zarzuela encompasses musical theatre in the Spanish language – ranging from baroque opera to comedy, tragedy, and works akin to verismo or revue. The company’s mission is to free the genre from clichés and preconceptions, restoring its artistic relevance and fostering greater appreciation – both within the Spanish-speaking world and on the international stage.
“If Die Zauberflöte had been written in Spanish, one might say it’s a zarzuela. Cavalleria rusticana in Spanish? A zarzuela… One could even argue that Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg is a German zarzuela.” says Christof Loy.
Ophelias Culture PR has supported the project since its founding in 2025 through press relations, public relations, and strategic consulting.
