Ensemble Modern

Ensemble Modern is one of the most renowned ensembles for contemporary music worldwide. Founded in 1980 and based in Frankfurt am Main, the ensemble is currently shaped by 18 soloists who lead the activities of this democratically organized collective. The aesthetic range of Ensemble Modern encompasses music and dance theatre genres, multimedia forms, as well as chamber music, ensemble, and orchestra concerts. Every year, the ensemble premieres approximately 70 compositions, including around 20 world premieres, some of which it commissions itself. The commissioned works also include large-scale pieces created for the expanded Ensemble Modern Orchestra, which has grown to orchestral size.

Ensemble Modern performs at the most prestigious festivals around the world. In its home city of Frankfurt, the ensemble performs in its own subscription series at the Alte Oper Frankfurt and regularly collaborates with the Oper Frankfurt on music theatre productions, as well as the legendary Happy New Ears concert series since 1993.

In 2000, it founded its own label, Ensemble Modern Medien, and has released numerous productions, often in collaboration with German public broadcasters. Other albums have been released with established labels, including col legno, ECM Records, NEOS Music, Sony Music, and Wergo. In 2003, Ensemble Modern established the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA).

In 2024, Ensemble Modern was awarded the Silver Lion at the Biennale Musica di Venezia.
