Royal Opera of Wallonia-Liège
As one of Belgium’s three royal opera houses, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège is one of the country’s most important cultural institutions. Founded in 1820 by the citizenry, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège has a longer tradition than the Belgian monarchy. Today, it is a modern opera house with regular online broadcasts, realised by Culturebox and medici.tv, among others, which are received worldwide. The current director of the house is Stefano Pace, and Giampaolo Bisanti has been the chief conductor since 2022.
In the 2024/25 season, Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde for the first time since 1926 at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège. Featuring Benoît Mernier’s one-act opera Bartleby Following Herman Melville’s novella, an exciting premiere is scheduled for May 2026. Otherwise, in the 2025/26 season, Gounod, Mozart, Donizetti, and Verdi will meet Johann Strauss II, Tchaikovsky, Nino Rota, and Poulenc.
