Kai Hinrich Müller
Dr. Kai Hinrich Müller’s work as a scientist, dramaturg, and curator seeks dialogue across formats and continents, regularly taking him to renowned institutions and artists in Europe and the USA. Close collaboration particularly connects him with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Klaus Mäkelä, Aurel Dawidiuk, the Vienna Musikverein, and HarrisonParrott. His programmes and festivals have been widely discussed in the press and include, among others, the transatlantic series Opera & Democracy in collaboration with the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles and other partners, the series Bauhaus Music at the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design and the Terezín Music Academy in the former Theresienstadt Ghetto. The latter is an initiative of the project Unwelcome music the Prague State Opera and the German Embassy in Prague, for which he curated numerous programmes on artists persecuted by the Nazis. Furthermore, he is a driving force behind various initiatives for the historically informed performance of Richard Wagner’s operas: Wagner Interpretations (2017–21) as well as The Wagner Cycles (2023 onwards), together with Kent Nagano, Jan Vogler, the Dresden Music Festival, the Dresden Festival Orchestra and Concerto Köln. Further projects have taken him to, among others, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Bavarian State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the Goethe-Institut New York, the Cologne Opera, the International Bach Academy Stuttgart, the Bayreuth Festival, the International Handel Festival Göttingen and to WDR and NDR.
The musicologist, who holds a habilitation, is a scholarship holder of various foundations, was a Fellow at the Thomas Mann House in 2023, and teaches at the Cologne University of Music and Dance. His research ranges from the musical life of the interwar and Nazi eras to transatlantic music history. Furthermore, his particular interest lies in the field of performance practice in history and the present day. His publications include, among others:. Rediscovery and protest.
