Kai Hin­rich Müller

Dr. Kai Hin­rich Müller’s work as a sci­ent­ist, dram­at­urg, and cur­at­or seeks dia­logue across formats and con­tin­ents, reg­u­larly tak­ing him to renowned insti­tu­tions and artists in Europe and the USA. Close col­lab­or­a­tion par­tic­u­larly con­nects him with the Freiburg Baroque Orches­tra, Klaus Mäkelä, Aurel Daw­idi­uk, the Vienna Musik­ver­ein, and Har­ris­on­Par­rott. His pro­grammes and fest­ivals have been widely dis­cussed in the press and include, among oth­ers, the transat­lantic series Opera & Demo­cracy in col­lab­or­a­tion with the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles and oth­er part­ners, the series Bauhaus Music at the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design and the Terezín Music Academy in the former Ther­esi­en­stadt Ghetto. The lat­ter is an ini­ti­at­ive of the pro­ject Unwel­come music the Prague State Opera and the Ger­man Embassy in Prague, for which he cur­ated numer­ous pro­grammes on artists per­se­cuted by the Nazis. Fur­ther­more, he is a driv­ing force behind vari­ous ini­ti­at­ives for the his­tor­ic­ally informed per­form­ance of Richard Wagner’s oper­as: Wag­n­er Inter­pret­a­tions (2017–21) as well as The Wag­n­er Cycles (2023 onwards), togeth­er with Kent Nagano, Jan Vogler, the Dresden Music Fest­iv­al, the Dresden Fest­iv­al Orches­tra and Con­certo Köln. Fur­ther pro­jects have taken him to, among oth­ers, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Bav­ari­an State Opera, the Ham­burg State Opera, the Aus­tri­an Cul­tur­al For­um New York, the Goethe-Insti­tut New York, the Cologne Opera, the Inter­na­tion­al Bach Academy Stut­tgart, the Bayreuth Fest­iv­al, the Inter­na­tion­al Han­del Fest­iv­al Göt­tin­gen and to WDR and NDR.

The musi­co­lo­gist, who holds a habil­it­a­tion, is a schol­ar­ship hold­er of vari­ous found­a­tions, was a Fel­low at the Thomas Mann House in 2023, and teaches at the Cologne Uni­ver­sity of Music and Dance. His research ranges from the music­al life of the inter­war and Nazi eras to transat­lantic music his­tory. Fur­ther­more, his par­tic­u­lar interest lies in the field of per­form­ance prac­tice in his­tory and the present day. His pub­lic­a­tions include, among oth­ers:. Redis­cov­ery and protest. Old music in cul­tur­al memory (2013), Wag­n­er Inter­pret­a­tions (2022), “It’s a Man’s World?” Female Artists in Europe’s Music Met­ro­pol­ises of the Early 20th Cen­tury (2023) and Musi­cians in the Bauhaus envir­on­ment (2025).
