George Petrou

Early Music | Conductor | Director

George Petrou was already doing well on his way to make a name for himself as a successful concert pianist when he decided to pursue a career as a conductor. Since then, the Greek-born pianist has performed with internationally renowned orchestras on stages all over the world. He also realises his passion for early music, namely baroque opera, as a director. For example, in the debut of Vivaldi's "Il Guistiono" at Drottingholm Castle Theatre, he is conducting and directing at the same time.

Ophelias PR supports George Petrou with PR and press work for all his exciting and varied projects.

In 2022 he took over the artistic direction of the Göttingen International Handel Festival. He aroused great enthusiasm with his production of Handel's "Cesare in Egitto" – again, the directing and conducting positions were united. In 2020 and 2021, Petrou musically directed the opera productions at the Opera seria Bayreuth Baroque Festival. With his ensemble Armonia Atenea, he also performed in other numerous concerts as Orchestra in Residence. Tours with Armonia Atenea, for which he has been musical director for ten years, regularly take him to the most famous concert halls and opera houses in Europe.

Petrou, a Grammy nominee and ECHO Klassik award winner, also regularly performs operas by Mozart or Verdi with the ERT National Symphonic Orchestra at the Olympia Municipal Music Theatre Maria Callas. Highlights of the season include productions at the Cologne Opera, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Zurich Opera, the Komische Oper Berlin, as well as concert appearances at La Scala Milan, the Teatro la Fenice Venice, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Theater an der Wien.

In August 2022, George Petrou led the acclaimed production of Vivaldi's "Il Giustino" with an international star cast in the historic ambience of Sweden's Drottningholm Palace Theatre in the dual role of stage director and conductor.
