The International Festival of Opera Seria Bayreuth Baroque had its premiere season in 2020 and caused a national and international sensation. The focus is on the rediscovery of stage works rarely performed in post-Baroque times, ideally suited to the historic UNESCO World Heritage of the Bayreuth Margravial Opera House.

The baroque event takes place every year in September with two opera productions each year as well as concerts with world-class artists. Artistic director for the coming years is countertenor, director and producer Max Emanuel Cencic.

It was the great wish of the city of Bayreuth to initiate a baroque festival there after the renovation of the Margravial Opera House in accordance with the preservation order. The theater of Wilhelmine of Bayreuth, which was opened in 1748, is a perfect venue for rare operas from its time of origin, so baroque opere serie are staged again at the original venue in one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world. This gives Bayreuth another world-class festival. Other venues include the castle and city church in Bayreuth.

The first edition of Bayreuth Baroque took place from September 3 to 13, 2020. Highlights were the opera production by Max Emanual Cencic of Nicola Porpora's "Carlo il Calvo", the concert performance of Leonardo Vinci's "Gismondo, Re di Polonia". Participants in the opera performances included Julia Lezhneva, Sophie Junker, Franco Fagioli, Max Emanuel Cencic, Bruno de Sá, and the ensembles Armonia Atenea conducted by George Petrou and {oh!} Orkiestra Historyczna! conducted by Martyna Pastuszka.

Other stars of the international baroque scene, such as Romina Basso, Vivica Genaux, Joyce DiDonato and Jordi Savall performed concerts.

In addition to the success on site with a completely sold-out Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, the media response was also overwhelming. "Carlo il Calvo" was broadcast live in the Cineplex cinemas of Bayreuth and Mannheim. In addition, with broadcasts on mezzo.tv, BR-Klassik and Facebook livestreams, the festival offered the opportunity to experience the highlights of the first season anywhere in the world. These offerings were overwhelmingly well received: The Bayreuth Baroque Online Edition alone reached nearly 360,000 people via social media in the period from September 8 to 14.
